What we don't often talk about is whether there was a Singapore before 1819? We all know the account of Raffles stumbling upon a sleepy fishing village and before that we heard of the story of Sang Nila Utama and the mysterious lion which led to the name Singapura. Fact? Fiction?

Over the next semester we are going to trace Singapore's journey from its early beginnings to the modern metropolis that we know today.

Our journey starts in the 1300s when we try to figure out what Singapore, pre-Raffles was like and continues to that pivotal moment of separation from Malaysia when Singapore gained its independence.
